Intention Definition & Exploration of Ideas:

This year, I have decided to go for the theme Visual Delight and the Arts of Daily Life. I decided to choose this theme because I think it fits nicely with Graphic Design; which is what I want to focus on this year. This theme is all about the art we see in our daily life that we might overlook. For example, an image on a t-shirt, a brand logo you might see on a bag of chips, or the design on a wedding invitation. These were all carefully designed by digital artists., who paid attention to different elements like typography, branding, and theming. The reason I picked this theme is because I am going to major in Graphic design in college, so I figured it would be a good idea to form a portfolio focusing on it.

Planning:

This marking period I wanted to try making low poly birds, so I made a Pinterest board with images that I liked and wanted to imitate the style of. Another part of planning I did was find reference images for each bird I made. When I was looking for reference images I tried to find ones that were clear enough for me to see, had nice colors, and had an interesting pose.

Producing:

For my project this marking period, I wanted to make different types of birds in a low poly style. I established for myself that I only wanted to make them out of triangles and that I wouldn't use any more side than that for consistency reasons. These are the finished birds I made on adobe illustrator. I made a chickadee, eastern blue bird, and hummingbird.

Evaluating:

Overall I am pretty happy with how these birds turned out, and I think I improved something in each bird I made. For example in the first bird I made, I didn't really pay attention to where the light source was coming from in the reference image; but when I made the blue bird I spent more time on getting the lighting right and picking the right colors. For example I adjusted the saturation values more and thought about where the shadows should be in each pose.
Another thing that I learned from making the first bird was that I wanted to find more dynamic and interesting poses for the birds than just standing still. I wanted to make it look like they were moving and give more life to them. I did this with the blue bird by finding a reference image that had a more interesting pose, and I also made the beak open which was not in the reference image.
One of the things that was challenging to me while making these birds was figuring out how to shade large areas of the same color (like the white tail feathers of the hummingbird) while still differentiating different parts of the birds. I eventually figured out how to do this by using warm and cool tones of the same color in different places depending on where the light is coming from.
I think overall these projects helped me have a better understanding of how color can be used to create shadows and when the color should have a warmer or cooler tone.

Integrating:

For the final marking period I want to explore a little more into typography and layout design that can be found on things like book covers, brochures, websites, etc. I think the knowledge I have gained about color from my most recent projects will help me with picking out colors that look good together. I think my basic knowledge of what fonts look nice together from previous projects will also help. For my next project specifically I might try to experiment with create a playbook for the beauty and the beast musical.
