Blog Post and Work Log 2/12

This week I tried something a little different and started working on geometric designs based off of birds. I wanted to try this because I came across one picture on a similar design and I really liked how the simple design looked. So here is what I have done so far in this style.

After finishing the chickadee I wanted to make more geometric birds and experiment more with lighting and gesture. I decided next to choose a blue bird.

After already finishing one design and starting another one in a week, I am pretty happy with what I have done so far. However, there are definitely things I can improve in this small project.
One thing that I could improve on and hope to work on in the blue bird design is deciding where I want the light source to be and following through that with the shapes consistently. I tried to do this with the Chickadee but there are some places where I feel the lighting is inconsistent.
Another thing I want to work on is making the bird have more a gesture or interesting pose. I say this because in the chickadee its pose was very a very simple side view and I could have found a reference picture that had a more interesting pose. This is something that I have already fixed in the blue bird design. I looked for a more dynamic pose of the bird and found one that was looking over it's shoulder. In the original picture, the blue bird has it's mouth closed but I thought it would be even more interesting if the bird had it's mouth open. You can see this change that I made in the progress picture.
Overall I am happy with how they both look so far, and I am really enjoying making them. I think it is a fun style to experiment with and it's nice to try something different. I think it might be cool to line them up in the future side by side once I finish making them, or I could place them all on one artboard.
