Brainstorming Page:

I wanted to research a little and find some ways to reduce the lag in my project file. To do this, I found a website that gives some ideas on how to reduce the ram that Blender uses. I believe that a lack of ram is what was causing my file to crash, so hopefully this can prevent that in the future.

  1. Reduce the amount of geometry.
  2. Reduce the amount and size of textures.
  3. Reduce the use of particles and simulation data
  4. Free up memory used in other applications

Reduce the amount of geometry:

This is one option to consider. Making the individual leaf and tree trunk have less vertices would definitely help with reducing the lag and possibility to crash. The only problem with this is that I have already modeled the tree trunk and leaf. They took a while to model, so I do not plan on remodeling them for sake of time. The only thing I could use this on is the ground and hills that I have yet to model.

Reduce the amount and size of textures:

Another possibility is to reduce the sizing of the textures that I use. I think this would be the easiest to do out of the four options. For the textures I am using that come from texture haven, I could just select the 2k option instead of the 4k or 8k option. This would be an easy was to reduce the ram that blender uses. The only thing is, I wouldn't be able to use this for the tree bark texture since I already stenciled it onto the tree. But I could at least use it on the grass and hand texture.

Reduce the use of particles and simulation data:

I already know that this is one way to reduce the ram used, and I think this is the main reason why my computer was crashing before. I can't significantly reduce the number, but I can at least reduce the grass and leaf numbers a little. I also plan to not apply the leaf particles until I have finished everything else so that they are virtual and won't take up as much ram.

Free up memory used in other applications:

The last alternative would be to free up the memory used in other applications. This might work with my personal laptop, but I doesn't really apply to the school provided computer since I don't have any other applications that are taking up place. Unless you count the google tabs that I have open, I won't be able to use this suggestion.

Conclusion:

I think that the best options are for me to reduce the size of textures, and reduce the use of particles. This is because it won't take much effort or time, and it is something that I can do without changing my plans significantly.

Work Log:

Monday:
My computer was crashing again, so I went to a previous file without my leaf particles applied and started texturing all over again.

Tuesday:
Continued texturing the tree with a stencil.

Wednesday:
I finished texturing the tree.

Thursday:
I played with some of the particle settings for the tree, and started to make the leaves with a fall texture.

Friday:
I continued to make the fall leaves.
