Layering Research Project: David Salle

David Salle:

David Salle is a post-modern artist who does photography, printmaking, and painting. He is known for using the Layering technique in many of his art pieces. By doing this, he adds complexity and interest to his art works, and makes the viewer question why each picture is added, and what it contributes to the over all meaning.

Examples:

In the example to the right, we can see one of his art works. This particular piece uses a technique called layering, which is when different pictures are layered on top of each other to make to show complexity, and make the audience question the meaning of the picture. This specific picture has many images like a car, a pack of cigarettes, an old picture of a woman, and what looks to be a watermelon. All of these layered objects at first glance seen to have nothing to do with each other, which creates interest in the viewer. Why are these images specifically selected? What do they add to the overall meaning of the piece? These are the types of questions the viewer might have when looking at an art work that uses layering.

David Salle has also used Layering to juxtapose images in order to communicate ideas. In this painting, we see a couple on the right in blue. The man is looking over at the woman, but the woman is looking forward with a concerned look on her face. Over on the left, we see an organ, that could possibly be a brain, liver, kidney, etc. This pair of organs could represent the couple on the right. Because of the disconnection between the couple, it could mean that their relationship is not working well. We can also see layered on the right a pair of legless chairs, a pink drawing of an apartment, and a white section that contains a drawing of clowns. These might symbolize the thoughts and/or memories of the couple. This technique of layering is very useful to deliver a message to the audience.

Questions:

- What have you learned about Layering?
I have learned that layering can be used to to create complexity and interest. It also can be used to make the viewer ask questions about the overall theme of the art work. Additionally, it is pairs with juxtaposition very well.

- How do contemporary artists use the concept of Layering in their artwork?
Contemporary artists often use layering to communicate an overarching idea or theme. They also use it in general to create complexity and a uniqueness in their artwork, to draw the audience in.

- How might you be able to use Layering in your own art?
In my own art, I could create layering by adding background elements in my animations. This could add complexity, and could also make my work more interesting to look at.

- Is there something that you found in your investigation that specifically interested or inspired you?
Something that specifically inspired me, was how David Salle was able to take everyday objects, and layer them to create a unique art piece with a meaning behind it.
